If you go to a place like Consumer Credit Counseling and you pay them and they pay your creditors, it kills your credit. It's like having a bankruptcy on your report. If you simply go and get information or advice, then I'm sure it doesn't affect it. But if you enroll at a credit counseling service that pays your bills for you and you pay them a lump sum, and they engage in communications with your creditors and get them to lower interest rates, etc--it's like a bankruptcy on your report.
